My husband fell into a coma after a terrible accident, and I stayed by his side, nursing him day and night for three agonizing years. Yet the moment he opened his eyes, he lost his damn mind. He claimed I wasn't his wife. "Who the hell are you?! Give me back my Olivia!" He seized me by the hair and shoved my head down into the sink, trying to drown me. If his parents hadn't burst in at that exact second, I would have suffocated right there. After tearing me from his grip, his mother broke down in tears, screaming at her son, Ethan. "You were in a coma! The doctors told us you might never wake up again! Olivia could have walked away and filed for divorce, but she broke her back at that hospital for three straight years! She took on crippling debt, ruined her own health, and gave up everything just to bring you back! You ungrateful bastard, how could you lay your hands on her?!" Ethan glared at them, his voice raw and stubborn. "She played you! Both of you! She's not my wife! I've been with Olivia for ten years—how could I possibly not recognize my own damn wife?!" His father couldn't take it anymore and raised a fist toward Ethan. I rushed forward, throwing myself between them. "Dad, don't! Stop!" I choked out a sob. "Fine! I admit it! I'm not Olivia! I'm not Ethan's wife!" The room fell dead silent. Everyone froze, staring at me in complete shock. A cold, manic sneer broke across Ethan's face. "I told you! I told you she was an imposter! Confess, damn it! Who are you, and where is my wife?!" His father looked utterly bewildered, shaking his head in disbelief. "Olivia... honey, did he drive you insane? What are you saying?" His mother reached out, her eyes brimming with worry. "Sweetheart, Ethan's been out of his mind ever since he woke up. You went through thirty separate hospital screenings, and every single record proved you're our daughter-in-law. If you're not Olivia, who else could you be?" Hearing her words, I rubbed my eyes and wiped away the stream of tears. Ever since Ethan came to, he insisted I was a fake. The neurologist said it could be a psychological trauma response or a rare neurological complication from his prolonged coma. But Ethan refused to get his brain scanned, and none of us could force him. To earn back his trust and soothe his paranoia, I endured every ounce of his cruelty. Even when my body was covered in bruises, I never called the cops, never fought back, and never once thought of giving up on him. Taking a deep, trembling breath, I looked Ethan straight in the eye. "You're right. I'm not your wife, Olivia." "Ethan, does hearing me say that make you feel better? Can you please stop torturing yourself now? If it helps you heal, I can be anyone you want me to be." "Tell me... who do you want me to become?" His parents let out collective sighs of relief, their hearts breaking for me. "Ethan, look at what you've pushed this poor girl to!" "Where on earth could you ever find a woman who loves you this much?!" Instead of calming down, Ethan lost what little control he had left. He clawed at his own face in a frenzy, leaving bloody gouges across his pale skin. My chest ached seeing him self-destruct. I rushed over to grab his wrists and stop him. The second I touched him, his fingers clamped around my hand with bone-crushing force. His bloodshot eyes bored into mine with pure venom. "You're such a brilliant little actress, aren't you?!" he snarled, his voice cracking. "You think playing the sweet, pitiful martyr will fool me like it fools my parents? In your dreams! You are not my Olivia, and you will never replace her!" His grip dug right into the fresh bruises he had left on my wrist earlier. The searing pain made tears spill uncontrollably down my cheeks. "Ethan, what's wrong with you? What do I have to do to make you trust me?" His parents couldn't bear to watch any longer. They pried Ethan's fingers off me and tried to drag him toward the door. "Son, you're coming with us to see a specialist right now! If you keep this up, you're going to drive Olivia away forever!" "For the past three years, she sold your company, sold the house, sold the car, and hocked every piece of jewelry she owned just to pay your medical bills! How could she possibly be an imposter?!" Seeing Ethan thrashing violently against his parents, I wiped my tears and gently intervened. "Mom, Dad, please don't force him if he doesn't want to go to the hospital. He just woke up; maybe his brain is still adjusting. Give him some time, and he might come back to his senses." Ethan's glare felt like an ice pick plunging straight into my chest. "There's nothing wrong with me! You two are blind—she's the problem!" "Did you all lose your minds? The real Olivia was bright, sunny, and full of life! Look at this manipulative bitch standing in front of you—how could this ever be my Olivia? She's wearing a mask, and God only knows where she hid the real one!" His teeth ground together audibly, fresh blood dripping down his gouged cheeks. Seeing their own flesh and blood completely unhinged, his parents couldn't bring themselves to use force anymore. They let him go, their voices trembling with grief. "Ethan... the doctors and the authorities ran background checks, medical checks, everything! All the records say she's Olivia. Why won't you just accept reality?" "She gave up her career, gave up her youth, and lived like an invalid beside your bed for three years! Is it any wonder she's changed a little?" "Please, son... I'm begging you. Stop hurting her." Under his mother's tearful pleas, Ethan slowly went quiet, dropping his hands. Fearing for my safety, his parents decided to move into our cramped apartment until Ethan stabilized. Over the days that followed, Ethan stopped hitting me and stopped clawing at his own skin. Yet the look in his eyes remained just as sick, suspicious, and full of hate. "Just you wait," he would whisper whenever we were alone. "I will expose you. And I will find my real Olivia."Ethan hadn't been discharged for very long, and his current physical and mental state made it impossible for him to work. The rent on our run-down apartment and our daily living expenses were all relying on loans I scrambled to borrow from friends. To keep him alive, I had sacrificed everything and drowned myself in debt, naive enough to believe that once he woke up, life would finally turn around. Instead, no matter what I did, Ethan looked at me like I was his worst enemy. He never touched a bite of the food I spent hours cooking, dumping it straight into the trash. When I washed his clothes, he sent them to a lab for chemical screening; even after they came back clean, he took a lighter to them and burned them to ashes. Even having a civil conversation with him was a distant fantasy. Living with him now was a thousand times more agonizing than the three years he spent in a vegetative state. "Olivia, you're the sole reason Ethan is breathing today," his mother said one evening, pulling me aside. "If he's going to stay like this forever, you should file for divorce. You're an incredible woman, and we can't let him ruin the rest of your life." Two months dragged by, and Ethan showed zero signs of improvement. After agonizing over it, his parents finally gathered the courage to tell me to walk away. Before I could answer, Ethan kicked open his bedroom door and barged out. "A divorce? In your fucking dreams! Until she brings my real wife back, she's leaving this house in a body bag!" Tears instantly blurred my vision. "Ethan, I never wanted to leave you. You treated me like a queen before the crash; how could I ever abandon you? If I wanted to walk away, I would have done it three years ago while you were still in that coma." His father stepped in, his face red with indignation. "We were the ones who brought up the divorce! Ethan, she's suffered enough for you! Forget about the three years she spent wiping your ass in that hospital—just look at how you've abused her since you woke up! And through it all, she hasn't left your side!" "Are you going to be satisfied only when you've driven her to jump off a bridge?!" Ethan knew every single sacrifice I had made. Yet not a trace of gratitude crossed his face. Only a chilled, twisted smirk. "Mom, Dad, did you actually see her taking care of me during those three years? Do you have any idea what she did to me behind closed doors when you weren't looking? She had an agenda from day one!" My fists clenched instinctively by my sides, a wave of tension washing over me. His parents stared at him, bewildered. "What are you talking about?" "Ethan, you were comatose. You don't have memories from back then. How could you know what Olivia did?" Ethan raised his phone, waving it with manic triumph. "I didn't know before, but I'm about to find out—" He grinned, showing his teeth as his predatory gaze locked onto me. "No matter how good your acting is, no matter how thoroughly you brainwashed my parents, it doesn't change the fact that you're not my Olivia!" "You claim you nursed me with all your heart, but you went out of your way to wipe every single piece of security footage from my hospital room! I knew you were hiding something, so I went behind your back and hired a hacker to recover the deleted files from the cloud server." "And guess what? I just went live on TikTok. I'm going to expose your sick little act right now, in front of the entire internet!" To ensure I had zero room to talk my way out of this, Ethan hadn't just hit the live broadcast button; he had also called the local police precinct, demanding they monitor his stream. The sensational title—*Exposing the Imposter Pretending to Be My Wife*—drew tens of thousands of viewers within minutes. Seeing how utterly confident Ethan looked, his parents' faith began to waver. They turned toward me, their eyes suddenly clouded with doubt. "Olivia... why did you delete the hospital cameras?" "Did you... did you actually do something behind our backs to hurt Ethan?"I shook my head vigorously, frantically waving my hands. "No! I didn't!" "Ethan, I swear on my life, I never did anything to hurt you." My voice broke into a ragged, desperate sob. "I deleted those recordings because... because I didn't want you to see them. I didn't want you to wake up, watch yourself lying there helpless, and feel like you lost your dignity as a man!" "Please, I'm begging you... if you want to watch the footage, we can watch it privately. Don't broadcast it to the world, please!" My pitiful cries instantly sparked a storm in the comments section. —*Just hopped in. Who's the villain here?* —*Wait, I saw this woman on the local news! Her husband was in a coma, and she sold everything she owned to nurse him for three years until he miraculously woke up! They were supposed to be couple goals, what kind of trashy drama is this?* —*I'm their neighbor, and I know the whole story! The guy lost his mind the second he opened his eyes, swearing his wife is a clone or some shit. Poor Olivia wasted three years of her life on this ungrateful psycho...* As the internet dug up our history, the chat turned viciously against Ethan. Yet Ethan didn't flinch. He sneered at the lens, his jaw set with delusional certainty. "She is not my wife! She's a deceitful bitch wearing my wife's clothes, and she wiped all the footage of the times she was alone with me!" "I'm streaming the recovered files right now. You'll see what kind of monster she really is!" He was so obsessed with "unmasking" me that he had crossed into full-blown madness; he couldn't wait even a single second. He hadn't even screened the recovered files himself before screen-sharing them directly into the broadcast, completely convinced that the footage would catch me red-handed. I lunged forward, grabbing his arm desperately. "Ethan, we loved each other so much! Why can't you believe me?!" "Don't play those tapes on a live stream, Ethan, you'll regret this!" My frantic begging only fueled his twisted excitement. He split the screen with a few swift taps, plastering the recovered hospital footage across half the stream. A mocking sneer curved his lips. "Game over. You're not fooling anyone anymore—" The next second, the words died in his throat. There was no footage of me abusing him behind closed doors, no sinister behavior, and no cruelty. On the screen, I was kneeling beside his hospital bed, clutching his limp hand, weeping until my voice was entirely shredded: *"Why won't you wake up? Ethan, I miss you so damn much..."* *"I'm going to sell the business. I'll take you to the best medical center in the country. Even if there's only a one-in-a-million chance, I'll give up everything I have, and I won't ever regret it."* The raw, gut-wrenching heartbreak in the video made his parents choke back tears. When they looked at Ethan now, their eyes held nothing but profound, bone-deep disappointment. The comment section erupted in tears and fury. —*He has a wife this devoted, and he's streaming this circus instead of worshipping the ground she walks on?!* —*His brain is definitely fried. Bro, if you don't want her, pass her over here, I'd treat her like a queen.* A flash of bewilderment washed over Ethan's face, but he quickly snapped back into his delusion. "No... this is wrong. This is impossible," he muttered, feverishly scrubbing through other video timestamps. Yet in every single clip where I appeared, I was either gently sponging his body, massaging his atrophied limbs, whispering encouraging words into his ear, or feeding him through a tube. The comments turned feral. A selfless, loving wife who gave up her entire youth. A paranoid, ungrateful husband who only breathed because of her care, yet treated her like a sworn enemy. A tidal wave of hate comments flooded the screen, tearing Ethan apart. He blocked it all out, trapped entirely inside his own psychosis, his fingers violently swiping across the glass, desperate to find a single frame that would prove his delusion. Unable to watch this disgrace any longer, his parents turned around and walked out of the room, trembling with disgust. The comments kept rolling: —*Is this guy even human? She spent hours every single day turning him over so he wouldn't get bedsores! It breaks my heart just watching her, and he has the nerve to say she's an imposter?* —*Holy shit, look at the timestamp—when he suffered severe impaction, she manually cleared his bowels with her bare hands! Even real family members would gag doing something that degrading! She didn't flinch once! She threw her entire soul away on a piece of human garbage...* Seeing the stream broadcast such deeply humiliating and private care, I scrambled up from the floor to cover the lens. "Ethan, stop it, please!" "Do you see now? I deleted the footage because I didn't want you to see yourself like this! I didn't want you to feel indebted or emasculated!" "I really am your wife, I—" Before I could finish, his palm cracked across my face with sickening force. *Smack!* "Shut your mouth!" he bellowed, his eyes wild. "I didn't realize how deep your schemes went. You really played the long game, didn't you?!" "Don't look so smug! I hired a private investigator to dig into your background. Over my dead body will I let you take Olivia's place!"The chat exploded instantly. —*Does this scumbag even deserve oxygen?! If I were Olivia, I would've cashed out his assets the day he flatlined and left him to rot in that bed!* —*Can someone put him out of his misery?! She literally kept him alive, and not only does he accuse her, he's actively hitting her! Where are the cops?! This is straight-up domestic violence, arrest him already!* Ethan leaned in toward the lens, screaming like a wounded animal. "What the fuck do you people know?! She isn't my wife! She's a fake! Do you think I wouldn't recognize my own wife?!" After his deranged outburst, he slammed the stream shut. Turning around, he lunged at me, his fingers locking around my throat like iron bands. "What kind of freak are you?! Where is my wife?! Give her back to me!" He had completely snapped. His fingers squeezed tighter and tighter, crushing my windpipe. Even though his muscles had atrophied over three years, he was still a grown man. No matter how wildly I thrashed and clawed at his hands, I couldn't break his hold. A faint, strangled wheeze squeezed past my lips: "Ethan... please... calm down..." Black spots swam across my vision. Just as darkness threatened to pull me under, the apartment door crashed open. His parents rushed in with two police officers and tackled him off me. I collapsed onto the floor, clutching my bruised throat and gasping violently for air. By the time I caught my breath, Ethan was pinned facedown, his hands cuffed behind his back. His mother wiped her tears, her voice cracking with heartbreak and bitter resolve. "Ethan, we didn't want to call the police on our own boy, but you've gone too far! We can't watch you twenty-four hours a day, and we won't let you beat Olivia half to death! Maybe a few months behind bars will force you to get your head straight!" Despite the steel cuffs biting into his wrists, Ethan thrashed wildly on the carpet. "I can't go to jail!" "Mom! Dad! If they lock me up, no one will ever find the real Olivia! I'm your son—why won't you believe me?! She isn't Olivia! She really isn't Olivia!" One of the officers cut him off sharply. "Shut it! Stand up!" "You might not even end up in jail. If the psychiatric evaluation comes back positive, you're going straight to a mandatory mental health facility." Ethan fought back even harder, his voice screeching. "I'm not crazy! I swear to God I'm not crazy!" Watching him unravel on the floor, my eyes welled with fresh tears, looking every bit the heartbroken wife. No one in the room paid any attention to his raving anymore. His mother walked over, taking my trembling hands into hers. "Olivia, I know how much you love him. I know it tears you apart to see him like this, but you can't be soft-hearted right now." "For the sake of your future, we have to force him into treatment. Medicine is advanced these days; whatever damage his brain took during those three years, the doctors will fix it!" I clenched my fists, hesitating with a look of profound sorrow before finally giving a slow, reluctant nod. Just as the officers escorted Ethan toward the front door, his phone suddenly rang in his pocket. Gathering an explosive burst of adrenaline, Ethan slammed his shoulder into the officer, knocked him aside, and managed to fish the phone out with his cuffed fingers. Seeing the caller ID, Ethan let out a hysterical, cracked laugh. "The proof is here! I'm about to prove she's an imposter right now!" He jammed his thumb against the screen, answering the call and hitting the speaker button. A man's voice came through the line: "Ethan, I found it! She traveled abroad years ago and used an alias to undergo full reconstructive plastic surgery! I just got my hands on the clinic's records, sending them to your phone right now!" The next second, Ethan snapped his neck toward me, his eyes gleaming with mad triumph. "Ha! You still want to play dumb?! You literally bought my wife's face at a clinic!" His parents and the two officers turned their heads, their gazes heavy with suspicion as they landed squarely on me. I knew I couldn't hide it anymore. Letting out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh, I said softly, "Fine... it's true. I did have plastic surgery to look like this..."

Over my dead body will I let you take Olivia's place!"

Chapter 4

The chat exploded instantly.
