Chapter 1

On our fifth anniversary, my husband Nathan Hayes finally takes me to a concert, then hands me a staff badge. "The VIP seats need extra help tonight," he says. "I need you to help out for now, and we'll celebrate our anniversary after the show." For a second, I think he must be joking. Nathan is always good at surprising me, so I believe he has made some big surprise awaiting me at the concert. The lights go down, and the crowd starts screaming. I stand near the front section with the other staff while I hold a basket of wrapped candy favors. Then the three women in the first row stand up at the same time. They take off their coats, and my fingers turn cold around the basket. Claire Whitman is Nathan's childhood friend, Sophie Lane is his first love, and Vivian Reed is his assistant. All three of them are wearing wedding dresses. The big screen cuts to Nathan as he drops to one knee. The whole stadium erupts with cheers, screams, and camera flashes. I stand frozen in the aisle while Nathan takes out three rings. He slides the rings onto their fingers one by one. Claire covers her mouth and cries for the cameras. Sophie smiles like she has waited for this moment her whole life. Vivian lifts her hand toward the big screen and shows off the diamond. The candy favors spill across the aisle at my feet. The manager's voice snaps through my earpiece. "Nora, clean the aisle now." I do not move at first. "Nora, guests are coming through, so pick up the candy." I crouch down in the aisle and start picking up the candy favors one by one. My husband smiles on the big screen while he puts rings on three other women. I kneel at their feet, and Nathan does not look at me once. By the time the concert ends, my knees hurt and my hands smell like cheap sugar. The crowd leaves in waves, and the staff begin clearing the floor. That is when I see a phone under Vivian's seat. The screen is still on, and a private group chat is open. The chat has four people in it: Claire, Sophie, Vivian, and Nathan. My hand stops above the phone. Claire's latest message sits at the bottom of the screen. [I bet the actual wife sees the proposal and still won't make a scene, because she'll just pick up the candy like a good girl.] Vivian replies with a laughing emoji. [Actual wife? She is just the placeholder who takes care of Nathan and keeps his family off our backs.] Sophie sends another message. [What happens if she asks for a divorce?] Nathan's reply appears right under it. [Don't give her that much credit.] [She worked too hard to become Mrs. Hayes, so the title should be enough for her.] For a moment, every sound in the arena fades behind the blood rushing in my ears. I keep scrolling through the chat. The group album shows exactly where Nathan went on every anniversary he missed. On our first anniversary, he told me he had a late meeting, but he was having dinner with Claire. On our second anniversary, he said he had a business trip, but he was on a beach with Sophie. On our third anniversary, he said his mother was sick, but he was drunk in a hotel suite with Vivian. On our fourth anniversary, he did not even bother with a real excuse, because he sent flowers through an assistant and spent the night with all three of them. Even the day we got married is in the chat. That day, I stood outside city hall in a white dress and held our marriage certificate like it was a promise. That same day, they were placing bets on how long it would take me to find out about them. Claire guessed one year. Vivian guessed three years. Sophie said I already knew but would pretend I did not. Nathan picked forever. [For the title of Mrs. Hayes, she can see everything with her own eyes and still put up with it for the rest of her life.] I stare at that message until the words blur. For five years, I think I am his wife. To them, I am a joke, a long-running bet, and a woman desperate enough for a last name to clean up their celebration. I take screenshots of everything. Then I record the entire chat from the beginning. My hands shake, but my mind is clear. I send everything to my lawyer, Ethan Carter. [Draft the divorce papers.] Then I book the earliest flight out. Nathan thinks being Mrs. Hayes is the lock that keeps me trapped. He forgets that the lock only works while I still love him. Now that I do not love him, the title means nothing.

Chapter 2

Nathan calls me on the way to the airport. His name lights up my screen, and I answer before the driver reaches the terminal. "The event work isn't finished," he says. "Where are you going?" "I'm going to the airport." Nathan pauses for a few seconds. "Are you doing this because of tonight?" I almost laugh. "Nathan, you proposed to three women right in front of me, so what am I supposed to be to you?" His voice stays calm, as if I am the one making this difficult. "They've been with me for years, and they only wanted to wear wedding dresses in public once." "You gave them rings." "The proposal was for the crowd and the cameras, but you are my wife." "What about the staff badge and the bet?" "It was just a joke." He says it so easily that I wonder how many times he has practiced making cruelty sound harmless. Then he adds, "You only picked up a few pieces of candy, and you'll still get paid for the work." My phone buzzes with a new email. A ticket appears on my screen for the next stop on the concert tour. The seat is front row, center. Nathan says, "I'll take you to the next show myself, and I'll give you a ring too." I decline the ticket. "I don't need it." "Then go away for a few days and clear your head," he says. "When you come back, we'll celebrate our anniversary again." I hang up before he can finish. There is nothing left for us to celebrate. The car keeps moving through the night while the airport lights get closer. I open our joint account because I need to cancel the automatic transfers. For five years, I put money into that account because Nathan promised we would have a real wedding one day. He said the courthouse marriage was only temporary. He said he would give me flowers, guests, a dress, and a ring he chose himself. I believed him because I wanted to believe my husband. Now the account history shows me the truth. Three diamond rings come out of our joint account. Three custom wedding dresses come out of our joint account. The concert proposal setup, the flowers, the cameras, the candy favors, and the VIP section all come out of our joint account. The money I saved for my wedding paid for his proposal to three other women. I cancel the automatic transfers. Then I move every dollar that belongs to me into my own account. The driver pulls up outside the airport. Just as I reach for my suitcase, my home security app sends me an alert. The camera has detected motion at the front door. I open the live feed. Nathan walks into our house with Claire, Sophie, and Vivian behind him. They are still wearing their wedding dresses, and each of them is pulling a suitcase. Claire looks around the living room like she already owns it. "I won the bet tonight," she says. "The master bedroom is mine, right?" Nathan gives a short hum. "Yes." Sophie's face changes at once. "Where are we supposed to sleep?" "You can pick any guest room." Vivian walks farther inside and glances toward the hallway. "What happens when Nora comes back?" Nathan laughs under his breath. "She only went out to cool off, and she'll accept you once she calms down." He says the words like my acceptance is already settled. He thinks I will accept them in my house, in my marriage, and in my bed. Nathan walks into the master bedroom. A minute later, he comes back holding my pillow. I bought that pillow when we moved into the house. I sleep on it every night because Nathan almost never comes home before midnight. He tosses it outside the bedroom door like it is trash. Claire lifts the skirt of her wedding dress and steps over it. The train of her dress drags across my pillow. Nathan takes her hand and leads her into my bedroom. The door closes behind them. I sit in the back seat of the car and hold my phone so tightly that my fingers ache. I save the security video. Then I download the account records. I send both files to Ethan. [Recover every cent that belongs to me.] His reply comes fast. [I'll handle it.] The boarding announcement echoes through the airport entrance. I turn off the security feed. For the first time in five years, I do not wonder when Nathan will come home. I pick up my suitcase and walk into the terminal. My flight to Southport is boarding, and I do not look back.

Chapter 3

By the time my plane lands in Southport, the concert video is already everywhere online. I turn on my phone and see Nathan on one knee again. The video shows Claire, Sophie, and Vivian in their wedding dresses. It shows the three rings, the screaming crowd, and Nathan's perfect smile. Then the edited clip cuts to me crouching in the aisle and picking up candy favors from the floor. No one online knows I am Nathan's wife. No one online knows I am the woman he married five years ago. Soon, two photos start spreading with my account tagged under them. One photo shows me wearing the staff badge. The other photo shows me picking up Vivian's phone after the show. The caption is short and cruel. [The woman in the video is only a temporary event worker.] [After the proposal, she stole a female guest's phone, probably because she wanted attention.] My notifications explode within minutes. [She is a thief.] [She is so jealous that it is embarrassing.] [She tried to ruin someone else's happy moment.] [She really thought she could fake being important.] I sit in the airport with my suitcase beside me and read comment after comment. For five years, Nathan hides me from the world. Now the world is helping him erase me. I send the posts to Ethan. [Screenshot everything, because I want to pursue this.] Then I upload my own evidence. I post a blurred copy of our marriage certificate. I post the lost-and-found record for Vivian's phone. I post the full screen recording of their private group chat. The recording does not only show what they said tonight. It shows the bets, the missed anniversaries, and Nathan saying I would never leave because I wanted the title of Mrs. Hayes too badly. For a few minutes, the comments begin to change. [Wait, the woman picking up candy is his wife?] [They made his wife work in the aisle while he proposed to three other women?] [That group chat is disgusting.] Then my post disappears. A platform notice pops up on my screen. [Removed after joint complaints from involved parties.] Nathan calls before I can even take a full breath. I answer, and his voice comes through cold and controlled. "Did you post the marriage certificate and the chat?" "Yes." "Stop responding, and I'll handle it." I look at the complaint notice on my screen. "How are you going to handle it?" "Our PR team will explain that you were part of the proposal setup," he says. "They will also explain that you have feelings for me, so you forged a marriage certificate." For a second, I think I must have misheard him. Then I laugh because the truth is too ugly to swallow quietly. "You are going to smear me in public for three mistresses?" The line goes quiet. Then Nathan says, "Be reasonable." "No." "If I admit you are my wife, people will call them homewreckers." "They are homewreckers." "You know who you are, and that should be enough." His words land harder than the insults online. A secret marriage, a staff badge, a pillow thrown outside my own bedroom, and a lie big enough to bury me are supposed to be enough. Nathan continues, "After the statement goes out, this ends here." He hangs up. Thirty minutes later, Hayes Group posts an official statement as the concert tour's sponsor. [Nora Bennett knew about the proposal arrangement in advance and voluntarily participated in the on-site execution.] [The private group chat was a joke among friends, so please stop spreading false claims.] The statement does not say I am Nathan's wife. It does not explain why those friends placed bets on me. It does not explain why Nathan gave three women rings while I cleaned the aisle. The internet turns on me again. [So she really was staff.] [I almost believed her fake wife story.] [She got caught lying and still wants sympathy.] I stare at the screen until my eyes burn. Nathan knows I am his legal wife. He knows I did not steal the phone. He knows they lied about me. But he would rather let strangers call me a thief than let Claire, Sophie, and Vivian be called what they are. Not long after, the concert's official account announces an extra encore show in Southport. Then the Southport venue manager calls me. "Ms. Bennett, Mr. Hayes has confirmed your appearance before the encore show." I stop walking. "What appearance did he confirm?" "The clarification segment," she says. "The three ladies will remove their rings onstage." My hand tightens around the phone. "What do you expect me to do?" "You will put the rings back on them yourself and publicly state that you accept the proposal." I do not answer her. The manager clears her throat. "There is also a short statement for you to read." A file arrives on my phone while she is still speaking. I open the document. [I, Nora Bennett, acted out of jealousy and released private messages without permission, and I sincerely apologize to Mr. Hayes and the three ladies.] One line is printed in bold at the bottom. [Approved by Nathan Hayes.] I read the document twice. Then I forward it to Ethan. [Add this to the case.] Nathan wants me to kneel again, but this time he wants cameras in front of me. He wants me to apologize to the women who laughed while he broke me. I turn off my phone and step outside the airport. The cold Southport air hits my face and clears my head. I need to stay awake for what comes next.
